PLACEMENT TEST INFORMATION

It is necessary for all students who have not taken any Chinese Studies language courses at UCSD, but who wish to take Chinese language courses, to take a quick, oral assessment test with one of our instructors. Please refer to the following section for information regarding placement tests.

WHEN:

PLACEMENT TESTS FOR SPRING 2008 WILL BE HELD ON TUESDAYS, WEDNESDAYS, AND THURSDAYS OF EACH WEEK UNTIL TENTH WEEK OF WINTER QUARTER. AFTER THAT, YOU WILL HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL THE FIRST TWO WEEKS OF SPRING QUARTER.

WHERE:

PLACEMENT TESTS FOR STUDENTS WILL BE SEPARATED INTO DIFFERENT TRACKS DEPENDING ON THE STUDENTS’ BACKGROUND.

A TRACK – FOR STUDENTS WITH NO CHINESE LANGUAGE BACKGROUND, OR FOR NON-NATIVE SPEAKERS WHO HAVE TAKEN CHINESE PREVIOUSLY. PLEASE PROCEED TO HSS 3071 TO SEE PROFESSOR QIN-HONG ANDERSON OR PROFESSOR PEI-CHIA CHEN.

B TRACK – FOR STUDENTS WHO ARE NATIVE SPEAKERS OF MANDARIN CHINESE IN THEIR HOMES. PLEASE PROCEED TO HSS 3067 TO SEE PROFESSOR QIAN HE OR HSS 4071 TO SEE PROFESSOR XIAO WANG

C TRACK – FOR STUDENTS WHO HAVE A LANGUAGE BACKGROUND IN A DIALECT OF CHINESE OTHER THAN MANDARIN. PLEASE PROCEED TO HSS 3085 TO SEE PROFESSOR KUO OR HSS 3056 TO SEE PROFESSOR SAMUEL CHA.

PROCESS:

1) OBTAIN STUDENT INFORMATION SHEET FROM INSTRUCTOR OR FROM HSS 3016.

2) COMPLETE STUDENT INFORMATION SHEET. FILL OUT ALL CONTACT INFORMATION, INCLUDING YOUR PID.

3) PROCEED TO INSTRUCTOR’S OFFICE FOR PLACEMENT TEST.

4) HAVE INSTRUCTOR INDICATE WHICH CLASS YOU HAVE BEEN PLACED TO ON THE STUDENT INFORMATION SHEET.

5) RETURN STUDENT INFORMATION SHEET TO HSS 3016.
