  • Learn One Full Year of Chinese in Just 9 Weeks at UCSD During Special Summer Session 2013
This summer Samuel Cha will be offering CHIN 10AN, CHIN 10BN and CHIN 10CN during Special Summer Session starting on July 1st. Or if you qualify, you may take CHIN 20AM for 3 weeks with Qian He.

You will need to take a short and informal placement test to learn which is the best CHIN course for you: Chinese Studies Placement Interview Information on either Tuesdays, Wednesdays or Thursdays during instructor offices hours.

  • UCI Chinese Calligraphy Contest for high school and college students.
The Chinese Program at UC Irvine is pleased to announce its annual Captain Wong Endowed Chinese  alligraphy Contest to be held on Friday 5/17/2013. This event is open to all students currently enrolled in a Chinese language classes in a college/university or a high school in the Southern California area. Just as last year, there will be 2 divisions at the event - high school and college/university.

  • Karl Gerth, Professor of History and the new holder of the Hwei-Chih and Julia Hsiu Endowed Chair in Chinese Studies at UCSD.
The Chinese Studies Program is pleased to announce that on April 16 Professor Karl Gerth of the University of Oxford accepted UC San Diego's offer of appointment as Professor of History and holder of the Hwei-Chih and Julia Hsiu Endowed Chair in Chinese Studies. Professor Gerth will join the UCSD faculty starting on July 1, 2013.  Professor Paul Pickowicz would like to thank all who participated in the process especially the colleagues who served with such dedication on the search committee during the last two years, for your strong interest and unflagging support during the recruitment process.

    • Informaton about the HueaYu Enrichment Scholarships (HES) can be located on http://www.tw.org/scholarships/. The deadline is usually in late March. This particular opportunity is not available to Chinese or Taiwanese born nationals. However there are Overseas Chinese Student Scholarships at www.ocac.gov.tw/english/index.asp.   • The Center for Chinese Studies (CCS) in Taiwan is offering Research Grants

  • CSULB SLI Chinese Program in Shanghai - Summer 2013 (June 24-August 1)
    • Consortium of CSU for Strategic Language Initiative SLI) at Long Beach has an opportunity to study abroad. Learn more at http://www.csulb.edu/labs/langlabs//sli/. They are accepting applications and important Chinese SAT and oral interview will occur at CSU Long Beach on March 20, 2013. SLI Scholarships are available to cover tuition, accommodation and tours of portions China. Students will pay for their own international travel, meals and books. Eligibility is a minimum of 2 years of Chinese, GPA of 3.0 or higher, U.S. citizenship or permanent residents, and be a matriculated college student. The deadline to apply is March 15, 2013.   • Shanghai Study Abroad Program - Scholarships available!

  • UC Davis announces Education Abroad for Summer 2013
    • Visit https://summer-abroad.ucdavis.edu to learn more about 4 week programs in China that earns you 8 UC units. Two trips are available in China from 6/19 to 7/18 in Wuxi and another from 8/12 to 9/7 in Beijing. The enrollment deadline is 4/5/13. Study abroad fees have been lowered and various. Travel Awards totaling $80,000 are available.
  • Intensive Chinese Program offered by Portland State University
    • Scholarships are available to help students participate in a 7 week intensive summer program via the ALLEX Foundation. Program runs June 24 - Aug. 9, 2013. To learn more about this opportunity in Portland, Oregon visit http://www.allex.org/summer. Students will learn and improve their speaking, listening, writing and reading skills. 
  • International Studies Abroad
    International Studies Abroad is a UCSD affiliated program abroad that recently added an educational opportunity at East China Normal University beginning fall 2010. Many of these courses are compatible with UCSD requirements and these program abroad options are inexpensive. There is a 2.5 GPA minimum requirement but no language requirement.   • Hsiao-wen CHENG, a post-doctoral fellow in the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica, offered a talk titled: "Pathologizing the "Single Yin": The Emergence of "Compulsory Heterosexuality" for Women in Song China" on March 20th. The talk took place in HSS 4025 - Galbraith Room (map) from 3:30-5:30PM. This talk is co-sponsored by the Korean Studies Initiative, the Department of History and the Program in Critial Gender Studies.
