Mingming Liu

Mingming Liu received her Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from University of California, Riverside, M.A. in East Asian Studies from Washington University in St. Louis, and B.A. in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language from East China Normal University in Shanghai, China. She taught at Pomona College, Williams College, Middlebury Language School, and Oakland University before joining UCSD in 2022. In addition to language teaching, she studies "zhiguai (record of the strange)" in traditional Chinese literature, and its development into modern narrative forms. She is interested in the relationship between reality and fantasy, what counts as “strange” in different cultural contexts, and how the strange shapes storytelling.
