Micah Muscolino

Director of Chinese Studies Program

Professor, History

Micah Muscolino is a historian of modern China with a focus on environmental history. He earned his B.A. from UC Berkeley and Ph.D. from Harvard University. His research examines how warfare, state-building, and natural resource use have shaped China’s environment from the late imperial period to the present.

His first book, Fishing Wars and Environmental Change in Late Imperial and Modern China (2009), explored marine resource struggles in the Zhoushan Islands. His second, The Ecology of War in China (2015), analyzed environmental devastation in Henan Province during World War II. His current project investigates water and soil conservation in Northwest China’s Loess Plateau.

Muscolino has published extensively on topics including global environmental history, energy, and territorial disputes. He also edits the “Historical Perspectives on China’s Environment” series for China Dialogue. His work has been supported by the NEH, Mellon Foundation, British Academy, and Fulbright Program.

Before joining UC San Diego in 2018, he taught at St. Mary’s College, Georgetown University, and the University of Oxford. He advises Ph.D. students and teaches courses on modern China and environmental history.
